I went through the Yellow Pages and called every PR and advertising agency I could find.

I ended up interviewing with a guy who owned a small marketing and design firm. It was a one-man shop and he needed someone to help bring in new business. He couldn’t afford to pay me, but promised I would get commission on any new work. So, the next day I rode a bus across town to his shop (the bus ride alone took about 90 minutes). Turns out he also had another person making cold calls. The catch was that there was only one phone. One of us went down a telephone list and made calls while the other one updated this guy’s database. I went back the next day and told him the deal was off. I still laugh when I think about how naïve I was.
