If you had a hundred friends online, and they all knew you and joked with you and provided support when you were having a bad day, asked about your family, etc. -- as long as they blatantly did not try to sell you anything, perhaps just mentioning a product every few months as part of a normal conversation, would it really matter if they were robots?

Product promotion is going to go from actors in movies to robots on internet sites.

I think about relationships with old friends in other states that exist mostly on the Web. Those are still meaningful. The fact that a "friend" on Facebook was a robot might make me feel different, but that wouldn't stop me from enjoying the conversation with my robot friends. Just as long as they wouldn't get all grouchy if I ignored them for a few weeks.

    Favorite robots: R2-D2 and Wall-e.

What about Number 5 from Short Circuit!?? He would make a great friend.
