Engaging the Media
Press conferences, media availabilities, photo opportunities and summits. These are all different forums to share information and engage various stakeholders. The one thing they all have in common is they are designed to be covered by the media and facilitate two-way conversations. Media and others are supposed to be able to ask questions and expect answers.
Today President Obama is hosting a bipartisan health care summit. I believe that the intent of the summit is to engage in an active bipartisan discussion on health care reform. Last week, Tiger Woods announced he was hosting a press conference to share with the world information on his recovery. I, like many others, watched this event live.
Last week's so-called press conference presented by Tiger Woods was little more than a staged event consisting of a hand-selected audience of friends and supporters along with a video camera providing a live feed for the rest of the world to see.
Today's health care summit lead by President Obama is taking a much more inclusive approach to the media. Encouraging questions and debate from the press, the Obama administration seems to feel a two-way conversation in the media will positively impact the discussions going on throughout the day by summit attendees.
I look forward to the outcome of today's summit and the contrast in media involvement from last week's event.
