Happy Birthday Twitter!

In late 2007, I dotted about the office and told my colleagues about this new microblog called Twitter. Back then, Twitter's top question was 'what are you doing?'  I joined Twitter because I saw it as a nifty tool that I could use to meet new people in the PR, communications and social media space. I also thought it would be a great way to connect with writers.

For those of you who don't know me, allow me to re-introduce myself  (having a Jay-Z moment). I love meeting people. Mainly because I'm interested in how people interact with one another and what makes folk tick. I'm also inquisitive; so Twitter fulfilled those needs.

Fast forward to 2011 and Twitter is everywhere - I mean everywhere.  It is referenced in TV commercials and journalists use it to find sources and break news.

Most notably, Twitter has been an effective political tool to overthrow governments.

But is Twitter too old? Is it passé?

Though 460,000 new Twitter accounts are opened daily, for old timers like me, Twitter has become a bit - meh.

I'm hunting for the next new thing. That new shiny object to admire. So far, I've found a few gems from some start ups and I still haven't decided if it has the 'it' factor.

Though successful, Twitter hasn't dug deeply enough to bring a different twist to the experience. The cosmetic change was OK and the list option was OK, but I need something new and fresh to stay with it.

My saving grace is that I have a private account. My network is comprised of folks who enjoy my tweets. Conversations range from everything to collard greens and cornbread mishaps to information about a new book, interesting statistic or gadget.

As Twitter celebrates its birthday, we can all applaud it for becoming mainstream. But with that moniker, comes an ever-present quest for an encore.

So, enough about me - what are your thoughts? Is Twitter all tweeted out? Is it here to stay?

Take care,

L.
