I spent my iPad money on a designer purse and matching shoes

It started with my boss.
He surprised his wife with an iPad a few weeks ago, fell in love with it and subsequently bought another for himself that he's been showing off around the office. When he brought it to a client meeting on Thursday, one of the clients pulled out hers as well and he began telling her all about the 3G iPad and Apple's wonderful customer service and how you can trade in the old one for a new one, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Then, a co-worker got his tax refund and decided that was the best way to spend it. "Should I go stand in line at the Apple store?" he asked. As if I had the answer. "Yes, if you have a few hours to spare," I told him. "But since you're at work, that's probably not the case." He ended up ordering it instead and then kept telling me when it would arrive and how he couldn't wait to get it.
Fast forward to Friday's HealthCampRDU, which Capstrat sponsored and helped organize. I was there live blogging, tweeting up a storm and helping in every way possible. I also kept seeing this one guy in particular with an iPad. It seemed like he was at every session I attended and he was just close enough for me to finally decide that I was going to get one.
The boss was quite encouraging as you can imagine. He told me via Twitter to zip to the Apple store right after HealthCampRDU and get one of my own. I was convinced, and decided to go buy one on Saturday.
But before I got to the Apple store, I approached the Coach store. I have a real affinity for Coach handbags and had been wanting a new purse for quite some time. I'd also been eye-balling a pair of Coach shoes at Hudson Belk for nearly 8 months but they were never on sale and I just didn't want to spend that much. So why was I going to drop a cool $600 on an iPad with no qualms? Hmmm....
Long story short, I spent my iPad money on a new Coach bag and matching shoes, and didn't think twice about it. As much as I love new technology, it just doesn't feel like a reward, the way a new purse does. I have a long history with Coach, and no history with Apple, so perhaps it was an internal brand war. I do think Steve Jobs is a genius but with me, there is no gravitational pull whatsoever toward the Apple store, while all roads in the mall lead me to the Coach store.
I'm wondering if I wanted the iPad because the cool kids have it and I like being cool. Because once I had that bag and shoes, the iPad was a distant memory. I walked right past the Apple store to Mrs. Field's cookies and then Build-a-Bear Workshop where my daughters' custom made teddy bears affectionately named Princess and Lindsay Lohan, came in at $75 bucks.
So the iPad money is no more. But I've got my purse, and I will sport the matching shoes when I'm on vacation touring the White House next week and it feels great. The iPad craving is gone for now. I think I was just feeling the pressure.
We'll see if it comes back.

The important question is will the Coach bag match the iPad as well as the shoes?
It's important to prioritize and coordinate these things.
I too have some major iPad envy going on. I'm trying to wait for V2 with the camera though.
On the bright side: Your iPad will fit nicely in that Coach bag when you cave in!
Love your post. I actually did the same thing minus the shoes. I love technology but I have always wanted to buy a real coach bag from a Coach store. Maybe one day I will cave in too.
Well, I can certainly understanding your liking of the Coach products but want to offer you an option should you cave in and decide to buy an ipad. I make custom ipad bags that also double as a purse. May not be a coach but will definetely be one of a kind as you can specific fabric and have it personalized.

I also make hip bags for the iphone or cells that have a strap and buckle around the waist for those who prefer not to put their phone in their pocket or have no pockets.
