Improve Your Odds
Mid-March. College basketball is in full swing. The weather is changing. And for many college students out there, graduation is fast-approaching. But before you turn your tassel and jump into the job market, you should ask yourself one very important question.
Would you take your resume to Vegas?
It may sound silly, but with the communications industry changing at a breakneck pace, it’s worth pondering. Regardless of your job-hunt status, you should be taking a good hard look at what kind of hand you’re about to throw on the table for a potential employer.
A recent post from the Firm Voice makes it clear that employers are looking for a Royal Flush. They want well-rounded talent of the highest quality. Not only do you have to be able to write well, you’ve got to understand and know how to harness social media, have good interpersonal skills, be able to think critically and be a master at multi-tasking. And like a Royal Flush, you’ve got to have all these skills working together consistently.
As communicators, we can no longer live in the bluffing zone of our natural strengths. We have to take chances on new forms of communication – always aiming to be learners – while we build our hand to Royal Flush status.
The odds of being dealt a Royal Flush in a poker game are slim, but with some work, a player can improve his hand. As a potential hire, you may be Four of a Kind, meaning you have all the skills, but haven’t honed them quite yet. That’s where several communications professors say experiential education – internships – will take your hand to a whole new level.
At Capstrat’s annual student networking night on April 6, we’ll be sharing some of our own insights on how to elevate your personal brand to Vegas-ready status. Students will hear from our employees and clients on how to take a pair of twos and turn them into odds every potential employer will take. For everyone on the job or internship hunt, I hope you’ll improve your odds and visit Capstrat on April 6.
