One of the questions I most often hear from college students is, "I know I need internships, but many internships are competitive and require experience to get experience. What can I do? Where can I start?"

My answer? Non-profit organizations. Why? Well, it worked for me. My first internship was with the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina, which showed me the many benefits that come with working at a non-profit as a first internship. Here are a few:

  • Smaller staff, bigger opportunities. While there were some specific tasks that the organization needed me to fulfill as a PR intern, anything else I wanted to tackle was fair game. For example, when I noticed that they needed some Web support and help with a big event, I expressed my interest in helping – and was quickly put to work. I found a lot of flexibility and autonomy when working at Make-a-Wish. I had talent and skills, and they needed people to help make it happen.- Build your network, get connected. Non-profit organizations typically have good connections with community leaders. I joined the Make-a-Wish communications committee, which was not only an interesting and insightful way to learn more about the communications industry, but a great way to build relationships with area communicators – who just might help connect me to my next internship or my first job.
  • Feel good, do good. I'd be lying if I didn't say that my summer helping make kids' wishes come true wasn't a feel-good experience. I was making a difference, and getting the experience I needed to launch my career. Talk about a win-win.
  • No pay? I know – it was a bummer. I also waitresses that summer to help pay my bills. If you're looking to make the big bucks, this option probably isn't for you. But, the experience and connections you'll make could be the thing that launches your next big thing. It’s certainly something to consider.

If you're looking for a non-profit in the Triangle area, check out Triangle Gives Back as a way to explore the many organizations available.

Good luck!  See you tonight at the Capstrat Student Networking Night!
