On Monday, Apple Computers announced iOS 5, the latest version of their operating system that powers iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. Among the many new features discussed for iOS 5 was integration with Twitter. While there are multiple Twitter apps currently available on iOS, there has never been a level of integration this deep between the OS and the social network.

Now more than ever, it is essential to consider the implications of Twitter for your business. Users will be talking about you, even if you are not talking back to them. If you haven’t yet, now is the time to focus and define your Twitter strategy. Here are three ideas to get you started:

  • Promote Your Twitter Account:  If Twitter hasn’t been a priority of your social media strategy, now is the time to reevaluate its role. Twitter is highly mobile, working not only on smart phones, but also SMS messaging. Be creative and think about where you can promote your Twitter account. We’ve seen a client’s followers increase by 15% within two weeks by including their Twitter account across the company-wide email signature.
  • Streamline Monitoring:  The lower the barrier to sharing and tweeting is, the more opportunities there are for people to say something about your company, brand, or product on Twitter. Define your process for monitoring, assessing, and responding to users on Twitter.  Solidifying your monitoring process and tool set early will make the workflow easier once the floodgates open. And don’t be afraid to tweak and adjust your process.
  • Be able to measure success: Every business using Twitter has different goals for the platform. Whether that is to raise awareness, build trust and loyalty, or sell products, creating an effective plan to measure these goals is essential.  Think about how you can use click data, web analytics, or sales data to evaluate your progress.

Apple’s choice to promote Twitter within their mobile OS may well be a turning point for even more mainstream acceptance and use of Twitter.  What remains to be seen is how this integration will be used by iOS users when the OS releases this fall.
