On Friday afternoon, I was lucky enough to be in the company of Charlotte Beers and 20 leading ladies of this advertising community.  The AAF-Raleigh Durham hosted a tea and discussion, lead by this Madison Ave. legend. I pretended to like tea, but I didn’t have to pretend to like the discussion.

This was the second event that I've attended with Charlotte, last year was a Mad Men panel she spoke at in Durham, and both times I left wanting more.  She has a way of making you explore your thoughts on a deeper level.  When she asked a question, she reminded us that the first answer is probably not the answer we were looking for – I found this true every time.

What I took away the most though is when she asked, "Why do you work?"  After thinking for a few minutes, followed by additional conversation among the group, I understood what Charlotte was getting at. I was inspired.

It’s important to understanding why you do what you do (in this case - work), so you can get the most out of it. If you need a motivator, try asking yourself this question. Remember it will not likely be your first answer.  Dig deeper.  You'll see.

In preparation of writing a book, Charlotte sought us out for information and we in turn, learned from her. A win win.  When the book is complete you will probably find it under Advertising/Marketing, though I think it's better suited under Self Help!
