What I learned from the Raleigh Media Leaders Event

What I learned from the Raleigh Media Leaders Event

Last night, I attended the Raleigh Media Leaders event held at the The Hive in Raleigh. As I was driving home from the event much later than I thought I would be, it was a school night, I began thinking of what I learned or took away from attending this event. Here's my top 5:

  1. I don't care what new tool or technology comes out, there is nothing that beats face-to-face conversations. I really enjoyed meeting a number of people who before last night's event I only knew as an avatar picture on Twitter.
  2. Lisa Creech Bledsoe can without question kick my ass .
  3. There are still far too many smart talented Raleigh folks who are out of work.  As leaders we need to do more to get these people back to work.
  4. At times, I get so wrapped up with the day to day minutia, I forget the larger more important focus of my job - engaging with people.  Whether it is for a client or at an event like Media Leaders Raleigh .  This event reenergized and reminded me why I got into this racket in the first place.
  5. And finally, last night reminded me how proud and lucky I am to be part of this community.  As I walked around the Hive and spoke with so many talented and engaging people, the only thing I could do was smile and look forward to our exciting future.

Before I end this and get back to work, I must give HUGE props to the folks who put this wonderful event together: Phil Buckley @1918 , Sarah Burris - @sarkatbur , Brian McDonald - @bmcd67 , Dan London - @danlondon and Morgan Siem - @morgansiem . What an incredible turn-out. Congrats to you all.

    Cord,

I totally agree with your top 5 and was so proud that the event exceeded the whole planning team's expectations! The Raleigh creative and media community is without doubt one of the strongest of anywhere I've ever worked and traveled.

Thanks to you and everyone at Capstrat for being part of the community and all that you do to make it flourish. From hosting Triangle AMA and other association events to engaging and participating online, Capstrat is a true media leader in everything it does!

Cord - Great talking with you last night. I am still trying to wipe the smile off of my face, but it might stick around for a while because I am SO PROUD of Raleigh and its fantastic, creative, engaged and smart community members. The event was such a pleasure to be a part of, and I personally appreciate every person who attended and helped make it what it was.

Hopefully Raleigh Media Leaders #2 is on the horizon!

Exactly right Cord, I think sometimes a good old-fashioned shooze-fest is just what the doctor ordered to recharge my batteries.

I met people last night that I only knew online, but getting to listen to them and connect really cements them as people I feel like I can count on going forward.

I love Raleigh and the super vibrant social, tech, media, advertising scene that is flourishing here. I know that it's partly due to people like you and companies like Capstrat - you make it hard not to try to be better.

    Thanks Cord!

I completely agree with your thoughts, Cord. Thanks so much to you and everyone else in our awesome Triangle community for making this event such a huge success. I enjoyed meeting all of you and I'm looking forward to an even bigger and better second event soon!

Absolutely concur with this post. There was such a variety of talents and interests (tightly) squeezed into one room last night, and even the relatively tiny amount that I got to meet last night managed to engage me for hours. I probably could have talked to everyone all night.

There's no reason why any of these people should be out of work, and I hope they find some (well deserved) employment soon.

That is a great review of a great event. I often wonder if other cities have such active and open social media and marketing communities.

And as much as I love Twitter, nothing does beat F2F.

    Thanks Cord.

Great wrap up, Cord. One of the things that impressed me most about last night was the circular pattern to all of this: the online community builds and supports a community of actual people which then gets together to enjoy each others company. That same group then returns to the online version of the community to make it more strong and supportive. Truly amazing to watch and to be a part of.

Thanks go out to you and everybody else helping build this community.

What a fun, energetic write-up! Your post makes me feel just as good reading it as I did last night, getting to meet IRL all these fantastic media people I know online. I'm honored to be a part of such a vibrant community.

And please have no fear. You are safe with me. :)

Ted, Allison, Sarah, Phil, Morgan and Brian,

Thanks for all your comments! It was great hanging with all of you last night. I really enjoyed myself and as I said in the post, I am excited for the future. We need to do this more often! :) Thanks again!

Cord, your commentary on last night's event is exactly right. We are so fortunate to live in an area that engages so many different people in so many different industries, both face to face and through social media. (Because, let's face it, none of us would've heard about Raleigh Media Leaders if it hadn't been for Twitter or Facebook...)

    Thanks for your wise words!

  • ilinap   1:27p.m. 01.27.2010

Great post, especially about the face to face connection and getting people back to (PAID!) work. And how is it we failed to meet last night?! Boo to that.

  • Jay Dolan   7:51p.m. 01.27.2010

I'm in full agreement. There's something so energizing about the people in this area and all the amazing things they do. It was great seeing you and the many other media leaders!
