The web is changing patient-doctor relationships and interactions. While knowledge is powerful, misinformation is dangerous. Consumers and healthcare organizations alike are finding themselves in a new world of empowerment with endless resources at their fingertips. But when bad information goes viral it not only can be dangerous, it can also create a significant liability.
On September 21, Capstrat President Karen Albritton will discuss “Reining in Online Influencers: The Emerging Role of Strangers in Healthcare Decisions” as part of Charlotte Social Media Club’s Educational Event series. Albritton will join Gayle Tuttle, Director of Strategic Communications at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Katie Ratchford, Media Relations Specialist with Carolinas HealthCare System. The panel will address how crowdsourcing medical information is changing the patient-doctor relationship, and ultimately, the business of healthcare.
“The landscape of health information on the web will only continue to evolve,” says Albritton. “Misinformation on the Internet makes it harder and more challenging to deal with a patient who has developed preconceived opinions about a prognosis. The use of online community support groups will continue to rise, creating an opportunity for social networks. However, patients and physicians both need to be mindful of the information they are ingesting.”
