At this week’s East Coast Game Conference, Capstrat Interactive Communications Executive Vice President Cord Silverstein will show gaming industry leaders how to steer public opinion online – and what pitfalls to avoid along the way. “Customers have a new megaphone called social media,” Silverstein says. “They’re using it to share the best – and the worst – about thousands of brands every day.”

Companies invest millions of dollars a year to build and protect their company brands. But businesses, ad execs and corporate visionaries aren’t alone in the driver’s seat anymore. Now anyone with a Facebook, Twitter or blog account can generate more buzz than any press release. Silverstein says the game of managing a company’s brand image is changing. The game has gone viral, and companies had better pull out the new rulebook.

In his discussion, titled “You No Longer Own Your Brand. Stop Whining and Deal with It,” Silverstein will show gaming professionals the tools that let them use social media to their advantage and protect their reputations online. He will outline social media “fire drills” companies can use to better understand social media risks and prepare for crises.

“Consumers now own the brand of each company,” Silverstein says. “That’s a common challenge all companies face – whether they are selling games or granola. They need to be able to effectively engage with their customers both online and offline, but especially online.”

Silverstein will give his presentation on Thursday, April 14 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in room 301A of the Raleigh Convention Center.
