Tuesday October 23, 2001

Raleigh, N.C. -- Capital Strategies is pleased to announce that in third quarter 2001 two biotech clients have selected the agency to provide public relations and marketing communications representation. The two organizations are NC Biosciences Organization and Athenix Corporation.

Biotechnology is now a 'lightning rod' for a diverse set of issues, most of which are not resolvable by science," says Tom Hoban, Ph.D., professor of Sociology and Food Science, North Carolina State University. "North Carolina has emerged as a world leader in its efforts to address the social, ethical and economic aspects of biotechnology. An organization's efforts need to be clearly communicated to target audiences."

NC Biosciences Organization (NC Bio) is a trade association for the bioscience industry. It monitors key state legislation and government actions that could affect biotech organizations, follows federal changes and legislation through its affiliation with BIO's staff in Washington D.C., and prepares reports and sponsors symposia on important subjects of interest to industry members.

Athenix Corp. is a start-up biotechnology company that discovers and develops novel genes, proteins and transgenic plants for the agricultural and petrochemical industries. The company's primary focus is the discovery of unique genes and proteins and their use to develop transgenic plants to reduce pesticide use in agriculture and to replace petroleum-derived carbon resources with renewable plant resources.
