RALEIGH, N.C. - How do you help families in dire circumstances stand on their own? You do it by giving them a second chance, which is exactly what Passage Home, a Raleigh-based organization, does every day. Capstrat, a strategic communications firm, has selected Passage Home as its pro bono client for 2006. Capstrat's employee-driven community involvement group, the Boomerang Society, selected the nonprofit organization after a review of more than 12 philanthropic organizations.

Passage Home gives low-income mothers and families the opportunity to become financially independent after difficult circumstances in their lives, such as homelessness or incarceration. The organization strives to bring hope and vitality to communities by focusing on economic stability. Using community development as their strategy, Passage Home provides affordable transitional housing and economic opportunities such as home ownership, job creation and business development, and encourages the spiritual well-being of the families and communities they serve.

Capstrat will provide Passage Home with a range of services including design, marketing communications and public relations. Specific work will include public relations materials, Web development and assistance in the creation of a new media relations plan. With these capabilities, Capstrat will support Passage Home in their mission to develop a better structure of stability for low-income families and neighborhoods.

"Capstrat created the Boomerang Society as a way to give back to the communities where we live and work," said Cameron Sheffield, co-chair of the employee-led society. "We're eager to begin our projects with Passage Home and help them build on their great work in Wake County."

"We can't wait to start our work with Capstrat," Passage Home Director of Development Steve Gruber said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an organization like ours. Capstrat can help us create a stronger identity in Wake County and in turn, a stronger community."

During the past five years, Capstrat has donated over $100,000 worth of pro bono hours to North Carolina organizations. Capstrat's previous pro bono clients include the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood, the Autism Society of North Carolina and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina.
