Company offers helping hand to man and animals alike

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 65 employees of Raleigh-based strategic marketing communications firm Capstrat, recently raised more than $500 and donated clothing, canned foods, and art and cleaning supplies for five nonprofit organizations in the Triangle.  Capstrat’s Boomerang Society, a community involvement program managed by the company’s employees, held its second annual Boomerang Week from Nov. 6-10.

This year’s Boomerang Week was dedicated to helping the Food Bank of Central and Eastern Carolina, Animal Kind, House of Hope of N.C., Oak Ranch and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International.  Capstrat also collected supplies for a local art teacher in need.

The week began with a Monday morning kick-off breakfast hosted by the Boomerang Society. Members of Society held a bake-sale style breakfast to raise funds to the various organizations.  Each day of the week highlighted a designated organization and donations were collected. The week ended with a brown bag lunch and informational session regarding the Wake County SPCA. Employees were asked to bring their lunches and donate what they normally would have spent for lunch to SPCA. But the big reward at the lunch was its special guest star – an eight-week-old puppy named Louie.

“We are thrilled that the second annual Boomerang Week was such a success,” said Cameron Sheffield, co-chair of the Boomerang Society.  “It is a great way for Capstrat to reach out to the local community, and we hope to continue this event for many years to come.”

In total, employee donations totaled 20 bags of clothing, 142 pounds of canned goods, 15 bags of cleaning supplies, more than 700 pounds of art supplies and more than $500 cash.

Since its creation in 2001, the Boomerang Society has donated more than $40,000 and countless volunteer hours to charitable organizations ranging from Habitat for Humanity to the 2004 tsunami relief effort.

“Capstrat believes in contributing to the communities where we do business,” said John Peterson, director of client services for Capstrat. “The Boomerang Society reflects our commitment to a workplace culture that focuses on more than just the job.  As a result, Capstrat is a better place and so is our community.”

The Boomerang Society chose the organizations from a list generated by Capstrat employees.
