Boomerang Society focus on area nonprofits a win for the community
RALEIGH, N.C. - Capstrat, a Raleigh-based strategic communications firm, was recently recognized by the Holmes Report, a well-known PR industry newsletter, for its community service. Capstrat's Boomerang Society, a community involvement program managed by Capstrat employees, was named one of the industry's Best Community Service Programs.
"Capstrat believes in contributing to the communities where we do business," said John Peterson, Capstrat director of Client Services. "The Boomerang Society reflects our commitment to a workplace culture that focuses on more than just the job. As a result, Capstrat is a better place, and so is our community."
This is not the first time the Boomerang Society has been nationally recognized; the Holmes Report also ranked the Boomerang Society one of the top 25 PR Agency Community Service Programs in the nation in 2001 and 2002. In addition, the Holmes Report recently ranked Capstrat the third best mid-sized agency to work for in 2006.
Since its creation in 2001, the Boomerang Society has donated more than $40,000 and countless volunteer hours to charitable organizations ranging from Habitat for Humanity to the 2004 tsunami relief effort.
In addition to allocating $10,000 annually to area 501(c)3 organizations, the Boomerang Society also coordinates a matching-gifts program that donates $250 for every 50 hours volunteered by a Capstrat employee. And in 2005, the Boomerang Society launched the Capstrat Cares Fund, which allows employees to arrange payroll deductions to set aside money for nonprofit groups of their choice.
The Boomerang Society chooses one local nonprofit organization each year to be its pro bono client. More than a dozen organizations competed to be the 2006 client; and the Boomerang Society chose Passage Home, a group that helps low-income families achieve financial self-sufficiency. Capstrat is assisting Passage Home with communications support and Web design.
"Boomerang Society projects also create great leadership opportunities for our junior staff members," said Liz Carroll, account executive and Boomerang Society co-chair. "It's a great way to get practical experience, while making a meaningful contribution to our community at the same time."
The Boomerang Society chairperson(s) is always a staff member outside the company's management team, and the committee draws participation from all areas of the company.
